The United States is rapidly continuing to release oil from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) to mitigate supply chain disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict with Iran.

According to Operative Information Center-OMM, which cited data from the US Department of Energy, the release of crude oil remains a key strategy for the administration of US President Donald Trump to stabilize energy markets.

Reports indicate that 8 million barrels of oil were released into the market last week alone, following a release of 9.1 million barrels the previous week. Currently, the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve holds 357.1 million barrels of oil. Federal data confirms that this figure represents the lowest level recorded since January 2024.

Javier Blas, an energy and commodities analyst at Bloomberg, noted in a social media statement that if the current pace of withdrawals continues, the volume of reserves could fall below the minimum levels recorded during the previous administration by the end of next week.

CNN reports that since the commencement of military operations against Iran, the US has released approximately 58 million barrels from its strategic reserves, accounting for roughly 14 percent of the total volume. Experts warn that the continued depletion of these reserves could weaken the ability of the United States to compensate for potential future supply shortages, raising concerns about long-term energy security.

The Strategic Petroleum Reserve, established in the 1970s following the oil embargo, serves as an emergency stockpile to protect the US economy from sudden supply disruptions. Its management is a critical component of national energy policy, balancing immediate market needs with the necessity of maintaining a buffer for unforeseen geopolitical or natural crises.
