Armenian Parliament Speaker Ruben Rubinyan has called for an end to aggressive rhetoric and political marginalization within the legislative body, urging a shift in the country's political culture.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Rubinyan made these remarks while commenting on a recent incident involving opposition MP Edgar Ghazaryan. The Speaker emphasized that the current climate of confrontation between the ruling party and opposition forces is hindering constructive political discourse.
Rubinyan argued that certain opposition forces have long built their political image on aggression and insults. "The opposition, including forces outside of parliament, thrives on aggression and insults. They instill radical behavior in their voters. In such an environment, even the idea of apologizing to opponents seems unacceptable to some," Rubinyan stated.
The Speaker noted that the ruling "Civil Contract" party maintains a different approach to parliamentary conduct. He stressed that continuing the cycle of mutual aggression is unacceptable, noting that while some opposition deputies may privately acknowledge that their conduct in the parliamentary hall is inappropriate, they often feel unable to back down due to the entrenched political atmosphere.
"How can a person who calls others vile apologize?" the Speaker questioned, highlighting the difficulty of de-escalating the current political tensions in Armenia.
The Armenian parliament has frequently been the site of heated debates and physical altercations between ruling party members and the opposition, reflecting the deep political polarization that has characterized the country's domestic landscape in recent years.
