Serzh Sargsyan, the former leader of Armenia and chairman of the Republican Party of Armenia, has confirmed that he will not participate in the upcoming elections.
According to Operative Information Center-OMM, citing Armenian media, Sargsyan made the announcement ahead of the 18th Congress of the Republican Party of Armenia. When questioned regarding potential support for opposition figures such as Samvel Karapetyan or Arman Tatoyan, Sargsyan stated that the party's official stance would be clarified during the congress held on the eve of the elections. He further noted that the Republican Party of Armenia generally supports all opposition forces in the current political climate.
The decision marks a significant shift in the Armenian political landscape, as Sargsyan has remained a central figure in the country's opposition since the 2018 political changes. The Republican Party, which held power for over a decade, is currently navigating a complex pre-election environment characterized by shifting alliances and the emergence of new political blocs. This move by the party leadership is expected to influence the consolidation of opposition voters as the country prepares for the upcoming electoral cycle.
