Former Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan has been prohibited from leaving the country, according to reports citing the Armenian Anti-Corruption Committee.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reported that the decision follows the formal filing of criminal charges against the former head of state. The Anti-Corruption Committee confirmed that Sargsyan has been charged under Article 308, Part 2 of the Armenian Criminal Code (adopted in 2003), which corresponds to Article 441, Part 2, Clause 5 of the current Criminal Code.
The charges against Sargsyan are linked to a broader criminal investigation that also involves the country's second president, Robert Kocharyan. Sargsyan faces accusations related to the abuse of official powers, including multiple counts of large-scale bribery and money laundering. These legal developments occur amidst ongoing political instability in Armenia, where former high-ranking officials frequently face scrutiny regarding their tenure and financial conduct.
