The Semeru volcano, located in East Java province in central Indonesia, has erupted again, sending massive plumes of ash and smoke into the atmosphere. According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the volcanic activity was confirmed by data from the Antara volcanic monitoring station.

Initial reports indicate that ash and smoke rose approximately 1,500 meters above the crater, reaching an altitude of 5,176 meters above sea level. The eruption was characterized by dense white and gray ash clouds drifting toward the west. A subsequent eruption at Semeru was recorded shortly after, with ash columns reaching a height of 4.7 kilometers. In response to the escalating activity, local authorities have prohibited residents and tourists from entering a 5-kilometer radius around the crater due to the risk of pyroclastic flows and ejecting hot rocks.

Mount Semeru is the highest peak on Java island and ranks as the fourth-highest volcano in Indonesia. Indonesia sits on the "Pacific Ring of Fire," a high-seismic activity zone where different tectonic plates meet, making it home to approximately 130 active volcanoes. Semeru has a history of frequent eruptions, with significant events in recent years leading to large-scale evacuations and impacting local aviation and agriculture due to heavy ashfall.
