Fin körfəzində Rusiya tankerləri: Avropada 1 nömrəli həyəcan

While global attention remains fixed on the Strait of Hormuz, a new maritime crisis is unfolding in Europe as dozens of vessels, particularly tankers linked to Russia, have begun accumulating in the waters of the Gulf of Finland. The concentration of these vessels has raised alarms regarding maritime safety and regional security in the Baltic Sea.

The Operative Information Center-OMM, citing Politico, reports that the primary cause of this maritime congestion is the impact of strikes on Russian export infrastructure. Consequently, operations at major oil terminals in the Baltic Sea have been significantly disrupted. Specifically, the Ust-Luga and Primorsk terminals, which handle a substantial portion of Russian oil exports, are facing operational paralysis. These facilities are considered critical components in the financing of the ongoing conflict, leading to targeted strikes against oil infrastructure.

Currently, dozens of ships are anchored in the Gulf of Finland awaiting entry to Russian ports, with many situated within Estonia's exclusive economic zone and others in waters adjacent to Finland. A significant portion of these vessels belongs to Russia's "shadow fleet"—older tankers often found on international sanction and monitoring lists. Estonian authorities have expressed concern that the technical condition of these ships poses severe environmental risks, including potential fuel leaks or accidents that would directly impact coastal states. While officials in Tallinn state that no major environmental damage has been recorded yet, the situation remains under close observation.

The Gulf of Finland is a strategic arm of the Baltic Sea, serving as a vital maritime corridor for trade between Northern Europe and Russia. The current congestion highlights the growing volatility of maritime logistics in the region following the escalation of geopolitical tensions. As Azerbaijan maintains its role as a reliable energy partner for Europe, the stability of international shipping routes and the prevention of ecological disasters in shared waters remain priorities for the global community. Experts suggest that the accumulation of problematic vessels near European shores is a direct manifestation of the ongoing crisis in the international legal and security system.
