Russia and Ukraine have conducted a prisoner exchange, with both sides returning 185 personnel in a deal facilitated by the United Arab Emirates.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed the operation. The ministry stated that the returned Russian military personnel are currently in Belarus, where they are receiving assistance from Yana Lantratova, the Russian Commissioner for Human Rights.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also officially confirmed the exchange. The United Arab Emirates played a key role as a mediator in the process, continuing its involvement in diplomatic efforts regarding the ongoing conflict.

Prisoner exchanges have become a recurring, albeit complex, aspect of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. These swaps are often negotiated through third-party intermediaries, such as the UAE or Turkey, as direct communication between the warring parties remains limited. Such humanitarian efforts are critical for the families of those held in captivity and represent rare instances of cooperation between the two nations amidst the broader geopolitical tensions.
