Suspect detained for jewelry theft in Sumgait

A 23-year-old man has been detained in Sumgait for allegedly stealing jewelry valued at 3,700 manats during a meeting arranged through social media. The suspect, identified as Ramin Tahirov, reportedly fled the scene after seizing the items under the guise of a purchase.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), the victim had posted an advertisement on social media to sell the jewelry. The suspect contacted the seller, expressing interest in the purchase, and arranged a meeting. During the encounter, Tahirov took the valuables and escaped in a vehicle. He was subsequently identified and apprehended by officers of the 3rd Police Division of the Sumgait City Police Department.

Sumgait, Azerbaijan's second-largest industrial city located on the Caspian coast, has seen increased efforts by the Ministry of Internal Affairs to combat crimes stemming from online marketplaces. Law enforcement agencies in Azerbaijan continue to advise citizens to exercise caution when conducting transactions with unknown individuals met through digital platforms and to prioritize meeting in secure, public locations. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
