Kazakhstan has officially scheduled snap parliamentary elections, marking a significant step in the nation's ongoing political transformation.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has signed a decree setting the date for the snap parliamentary elections for August 23. This electoral process is a pivotal component of broader constitutional reforms currently underway in the country.

The upcoming elections will facilitate the formation of a new unicameral legislative body, which is set to replace the country's current bicameral parliament. This structural change is designed to streamline the legislative process and aligns with the constitutional amendments initiated by the government.

Reports indicate that the "Adilet" party, established in May and which announced its intention to merge with the ruling "Amanat" party in June, will participate in the elections. The party is reportedly led by close allies of President Tokayev.

Since assuming the presidency in 2019, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has embarked on a series of large-scale political reforms. Following the civil unrest in 2022, which the President characterized as an attempted coup d'état, Tokayev has actively distanced his administration from the policies of his predecessor, Nursultan Nazarbayev.

These constitutional reforms also include provisions for the creation of a vice-presidential position, with appointments expected to be finalized following the conclusion of the parliamentary elections.
