Iran has officially informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regarding a projectile strike within the territory of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant (NPP).
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the IAEA disclosed this information via a statement on the X social media platform.
According to the report, the incident occurred on the evening of March 17. Iranian authorities notified the agency that a projectile landed within the perimeter of the Bushehr facility. It was noted that the plant sustained no structural damage, and there were no reported injuries among the personnel.
The statement highlighted that IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has called for maximum restraint during the ongoing conflict. He urged all parties to exercise extreme caution to prevent the risk of a catastrophic nuclear accident. Grossi emphasized that nuclear facilities should never be targets in military operations, as any breach of safety protocols could have far-reaching environmental and humanitarian consequences.
The Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, located on Iran's Persian Gulf coast, is the country's first civilian nuclear power facility. It began operations in 2011 with assistance from Russia and plays a critical role in Iran's energy infrastructure. The IAEA maintains regular monitoring of the site to ensure compliance with international safety standards and non-proliferation agreements. This incident comes amid heightened regional tensions, raising international concerns over the security of strategic energy assets in the Middle East.
