The vote counting process for the second round of the presidential election in Peru has concluded. According to the final results released by the country's National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), Keiko Fujimori has secured 50.135% of the vote, garnering support from 9,223,396 voters. Her opponent, left-wing candidate Roberto Sanchez, received 49.865% of the vote, totaling 9,173,755 ballots.
While the counting process is complete, the National Jury of Elections (JNE) is scheduled to officially announce the final results on July 3. In a post on the social media platform X, Keiko Fujimori welcomed the conclusion of the long and intense electoral process, stating that she awaits the official results with "great humility, caution, and responsibility."
Conversely, Roberto Sanchez has refused to accept the results, alleging irregularities without providing evidence. He has stated that he will not recognize a government led by Fujimori and plans to appeal to the courts before the official announcement. As protests by supporters occur in the capital, Lima, concerns regarding ongoing political instability in the country continue to mount.
The 51-year-old Keiko Fujimori is expected to assume office on July 28. If officially declared the winner, she will become Peru's 10th president since 2016. As the daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori, this victory marks her success on her fourth attempt at the presidency. During her campaign, Fujimori pledged to strengthen national unity, combat crime, and reduce social inequality in Peru.
