The European Union (EU) Ambassador to Georgia, Pawel Herczynski, has been summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) following controversial remarks made to the press.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the Georgian MFA issued a statement regarding the diplomatic consultation. The ambassador was called to the ministry to provide an explanation for his recent public comments, in which he stated that the European Union must prevent the Georgian people from returning to "violence, civil war, poverty, corruption, and dark times."
The Georgian government has characterized these statements as a potential threat directed at the country's population. During the visit to the ministry, Ambassador Herczynski held a meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili. The diplomat declined to provide comments to the media upon entering the MFA building.
Relations between Georgia and the European Union have faced significant strain since the adoption of the "Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence" in May 2024. While the EU has repeatedly called for the legislation's withdrawal, Georgian authorities maintain that the law is necessary to ensure the financial transparency of non-governmental organizations. Following the October 2024 parliamentary elections, where the Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia party secured 89 out of 150 seats, the ruling party announced in November 2024 that it would suspend EU membership negotiations until 2028 and decline EU budget grants.
