Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has indicated that transferring Russia's concession rights over Armenian railways to a third country represents the most viable solution for the current impasse. This development follows recent high-level diplomatic engagements regarding regional transport infrastructure.
According to Operative Information Center-OMM, citing Interfax, Pashinyan made these remarks during a briefing while commenting on his recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Bishkek. The Armenian leader emphasized the urgency of resolving the long-standing issues surrounding railway operations.
"We discussed the railway issue. There is a mutual understanding regarding the need for a resolution. The current situation cannot continue indefinitely, and decisions must be made," Pashinyan stated. He further clarified that both Armenia and Russia acknowledge that transferring the concession rights to a third party, acceptable to both nations, is the optimal path forward. "This is the best decision. Other options are unrealistic for me," he added.
The issue of railway management in Armenia is closely tied to the broader geopolitical landscape of the South Caucasus. Historically, the South Caucasus Railway, a subsidiary of Russian Railways, has operated the network in Armenia. Discussions regarding the future of these transport corridors are significant, particularly in the context of ongoing efforts to unblock regional communication lines and integrate the South Caucasus into broader international transit networks, such as the Zangezur Corridor, which remains a key point of discussion for regional connectivity.
