A recent survey in Germany has revealed significant public skepticism regarding the operational capabilities of the country's armed forces.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, which cited international media reports, the findings highlight a growing disconnect between government defense ambitions and public sentiment.
The YouGov poll, conducted between June 17 and July 1 among 2,079 adults, found that 70 percent of respondents do not believe the German Armed Forces could effectively defend the country in the event of an attack. Only 21 percent expressed confidence in the military, while 8 percent remained undecided. Notably, Germany recorded the lowest levels of public trust in the military among the countries surveyed.
Public resistance extends to the government's fiscal plans. While 40 percent of respondents felt current defense spending is insufficient, 77 percent opposed raising taxes to fund military expansion. Furthermore, 62 percent of participants rejected cuts to public services, and 59 percent opposed increased government borrowing.
Since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine in 2022, Berlin has accelerated efforts to modernize its defense sector. The government plans to increase defense spending from 86 billion euros last year to 153 billion euros by 2029. Additionally, there are ambitious targets to expand the professional military from 184,000 to 260,000 personnel by 2035, alongside increasing reserve forces to 200,000.
Experts note that achieving these targets remains challenging, particularly as debates intensify over the potential reinstatement of mandatory military service, which was suspended in 2011. The resistance from younger generations, often citing economic pressures such as inflation and unemployment, underscores the complex balancing act the German government faces between national security requirements and domestic socio-economic priorities.
