The German government has reached an agreement to acquire US-manufactured Tomahawk cruise missiles and deploy them within the country's territory.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced the development during a parliamentary address in Berlin.
The agreement was finalized following negotiations with US representatives on the sidelines of the recent NATO summit. Chancellor Merz stated that the summit exceeded expectations and emphasized that this acquisition will address a critical strategic gap in Germany's defense capabilities. Furthermore, the Chancellor reaffirmed Germany's commitment to continuing the development of independent European defense systems.
The deployment of Tomahawk missiles in Germany had previously faced uncertainty following statements from US President Donald Trump regarding potential reductions in the US military presence in the country. At the time, those remarks were interpreted as a suspension of plans to deploy a US battalion equipped with long-range missiles, a project originally negotiated under the previous US administration.
Berlin views the deployment of these missiles as a vital deterrent against external security threats. Meanwhile, European nations continue to pursue parallel initiatives to develop their own indigenous long-range missile systems to bolster regional security.
