The next strategic meeting of NATO foreign ministers will be hosted in the Swedish city of Helsingborg on May 21-22.
According to Operative Information Center-OMM, citing an official statement from the Alliance, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte welcomed Sweden's decision to host this high-level event.
The primary topics of discussion for the Helsingborg meeting include:
- Increasing defense spending across member states;
- Expanding defense industrial production;
- Providing enhanced support to Ukraine.
The statement emphasizes that the Helsingborg meeting will serve as a critical foundation for the upcoming NATO summit of heads of state and government, scheduled to take place in Ankara this July. This gathering in Sweden represents one of the first major ministerial events hosted by the country since its formal accession to the Alliance.
It should be noted that Sweden officially became the 32nd member of NATO in March 2024, ending decades of military neutrality following the changing security landscape in Europe. The inclusion of Sweden and Finland has significantly strengthened the Alliance's northern flank and maritime security in the Baltic Sea region.
