Azerbaijani border guards have neutralized an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attempting to violate the state border and successfully seized a significant quantity of narcotics. The operation is part of ongoing efforts to ensure the security of the state border and combat illicit drug trafficking.
According to the State Border Service (SBS), as reported by the Operative Information Center-OMM, recent border search and operational measures have resulted in the interception of 41 kilograms and 168 grams of narcotics being smuggled from the Islamic Republic of Iran into the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Specific operations were conducted across several border detachments. In the service area of the "Goytapa" border detachment, 6 kilograms and 478 grams of marijuana were seized, while 24 kilograms and 90 grams of marijuana were discovered in the service area of the "Lankaran" border detachment.
Furthermore, in the service area of the "Horadiz" border detachment, border guards neutralized a UAV attempting to transport narcotics across the border. A subsequent inspection of the site led to the seizure of 10 kilograms and 600 grams of narcotics, consisting of 10 kilograms and 550 grams of marijuana and 50 grams of opium.
Operational and investigative measures regarding these incidents are currently ongoing. Azerbaijan frequently conducts such operations to secure its borders against transnational crime, particularly given the ongoing challenges related to drug smuggling routes in the region.
