The Milli Majlis (National Assembly) of the Republic of Azerbaijan convened for a plenary session on Tuesday to discuss a revised agenda featuring nine key legislative and political issues. Chaired by Speaker Sahiba Gafarova, the session focused heavily on the parliament's formal response to recent actions taken by the European Parliament regarding Azerbaijan.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Speaker Gafarova emphasized that the Milli Majlis cannot remain silent regarding the European Parliament's biased activities. "Over the past 10 years, the European Parliament has been distinguished by its activities against Azerbaijan," Gafarova stated, noting that anti-Azerbaijan rhetoric intensified following the Second Garabagh War. She highlighted that 13 resolutions have been adopted against the country, describing them as provocations that lack objective criteria and reveal the institution's true motives.
The parliamentary discussion follows a formal diplomatic protest by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). Earlier today, the EU Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Mariyana Kuyunciç, was summoned to the MFA, where she was presented with a note of protest regarding a resolution adopted by the European Parliament on April 30. Azerbaijani officials have characterized the resolution's provisions as unfounded and biased, asserting that such documents undermine bilateral relations.
Beyond political statements, the session's agenda includes the approval of an "Agreement on cooperation in information exchange during the compulsory execution of court acts and acts of other authorized bodies and officials." This legislative move aims to streamline judicial enforcement processes and enhance inter-agency coordination within Azerbaijan. The Milli Majlis, as the unicameral legislative branch of the Republic of Azerbaijan, continues to address both domestic legal reforms and the country's strategic foreign policy priorities during its current spring session.
