President Ilham Aliyev and the President of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, have held an exchange of views on the crisis involving Iran, regional developments, and broader international issues during a high-level meeting.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Prime Minister Meloni emphasized the importance of hearing the perspective of the Azerbaijani leader, given the country's shared border and historical ties with Iran. "We once again wish for this crisis to be resolved as soon as possible. I reiterated our commitment to supporting any initiative serving this goal and establishing stability in the region," Meloni stated during a joint press conference. She also expressed deep gratitude to President Ilham Aliyev and the Azerbaijani authorities for their assistance in evacuating Italian citizens and facilitating the temporary relocation of the Italian embassy from Tehran to Baku, describing it as a testament to the strong friendship between the two nations.
Azerbaijan and Italy maintain a robust strategic partnership, characterized by high-level political dialogue and significant economic cooperation. Italy remains one of Azerbaijan's primary trading partners, particularly in the energy sector, as a key recipient of Azerbaijani natural gas through the Southern Gas Corridor. This diplomatic coordination on regional security issues further underscores Baku's growing role as a reliable mediator and a hub for international diplomatic missions in the South Caucasus.
