Design work is currently underway for the implementation of a new tram line connecting the Mehdiabad settlement to the "28 May" metro station in Baku.
According to Operative Information Center-OMM, Anar Rzayev, Chairman of the Board of the Azerbaijan Surface Transport Agency (AYNA), announced this during a roundtable dedicated to the implementation of the "2025–2030 State Program for the Improvement of Transport Infrastructure in Baku and Surrounding Areas." Rzayev emphasized that significant preparatory measures have been taken to restore tram services in the capital.
"A preliminary feasibility study for the introduction of a tram line from Mehdiabad settlement to the '28 May' metro station has already been prepared, and design work is currently being executed. Taking into account the planned route of the tram line, the cross-sectional form of the road in the 'Sea Breeze' area has also been agreed upon," Rzayev stated.
The reintroduction of tram lines is a strategic component of Azerbaijan's efforts to modernize urban mobility and promote sustainable development in the capital. Trams, which were a primary mode of transport in Baku for over a century before being decommissioned in the early 2000s, are now being integrated into the city's master plan to alleviate traffic density. The project aims to increase the accessibility of public transport, reduce the environmental impact of commuting, and establish a more efficient, eco-friendly transport network for the residents of Azerbaijan.
