Approximately 1,000 buses in Baku currently require replacement as part of a comprehensive fleet renewal strategy.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Anar Rzayev, Chairman of the Board of the Azerbaijan Surface Transport Agency (AYNA), announced these plans during a roundtable discussion focused on the 2025 implementation of the State Program for the improvement of transport infrastructure in Baku and surrounding areas.
Rzayev stated that the modernization will be carried out in stages between 2025 and 2030. According to the official, the total number of buses in the capital is projected to reach 2,800 by 2030. He noted that the newly imported buses are distinguished by their red color, and the presence of older white buses in the city will gradually decrease over time.
The Chairman emphasized that the renewal process gained significant momentum last year, with nearly 400 new buses brought to Baku and over 600 replaced across Azerbaijan. Starting this year, a dedicated "Public Transport" budget fund will be established, and a gross-cost contract system will be implemented with carriers. This financial framework is expected to accelerate the transition to an environmentally friendly fleet, aligning with Azerbaijan's broader sustainable urban mobility goals.
The modernization of the public transport system in Baku is a key component of the government's strategy to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality in the capital. By integrating electric and eco-friendly vehicles into the network, Azerbaijan aims to create a more efficient and reliable urban environment for its residents and visitors, supporting the long-term socio-economic development of the Absheron Peninsula.
