Florian Philippot, the leader of France's "Patriots" party, has strongly condemned President Emmanuel Macron's request to the United States leadership regarding the lifting of sanctions against several European officials.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Philippot characterized Macron's move as a "disgrace" in a post shared on the "X" social media platform.
According to reports from the "Tribune" newspaper, Emmanuel Macron sent a letter to US President Donald Trump requesting the removal of restrictions imposed on several Europeans, including Thierry Breton, the former EU Commissioner for the Internal Market, and Nicolas Guillou, a judge at the International Criminal Court. In his letter, the French leader argued that these sanctions were "unjust" and based on a "flawed analysis."
Florian Philippot criticized the appeal, stating:
"A disgrace! This is a complete inversion of values, which is the primary distinguishing feature of 'Macronism'!"
The controversy stems from actions taken late last year when US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a ban on Thierry Breton's entry into the United States due to his attempts to impose censorship on American platforms. Breton is considered one of the primary authors of the "EU Digital Services Act." Prior to billionaire Elon Musk's online interview with US President Donald Trump, Breton published a letter citing that law to threaten both the "X" platform and Musk.
This diplomatic friction highlights the ongoing tension between European regulatory frameworks and the administrative policies of the United States. Under the leadership of US President Donald Trump, Washington has maintained a firm stance against international officials perceived to be infringing on American interests or free speech principles. The situation underscores the complexities of transatlantic relations as France seeks to navigate its position between European Union solidarity and its bilateral relationship with the United States.
