Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede has announced a scheduled meeting on May 18 with Jeff Landry, the US special envoy for Greenland and Governor of Louisiana. The meeting aims to address recent tensions regarding the autonomous territory's status and to assert that decisions regarding Greenland's future rest solely with its inhabitants.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing foreign media, that the primary objective of the meeting is to clarify that the island's residents maintain exclusive authority over their governance. “I want to emphasize clearly here that only we—those living in Greenland—decide the future of Greenland. At the same time, it is important to me that the diplomatic process and the working group we have established continue to operate based on the principles of mutual respect, international law, and respect for Greenland,” Egede stated.
The appointment of Jeff Landry as special envoy in December 2025 has drawn significant criticism from both Denmark and Greenland. Landry has previously expressed his commitment to realizing the objectives of US President Donald Trump regarding the establishment of control over the island. While the White House announced the commencement of negotiations regarding the autonomous territory's future status on January 31, US President Donald Trump has been vocal about his intentions. Following his earlier proposals to purchase the island, US President Donald Trump suggested in March 2025 that the annexation of Greenland remains a strategic priority for his administration.
