Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Washington imposed new sanctions on Moscow shortly after Russia and the United States reached an agreement on parameters regarding the settlement in Ukraine.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Lavrov shared these remarks during an interview with RT. He noted that sanctions against Russia's largest oil companies, Lukoil and Rosneft, were implemented just two to three weeks after the high-level meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held in Anchorage, Alaska.
Lavrov emphasized that President Vladimir Putin expressed surprise at the imposition of these restrictive measures. The Foreign Minister explained that during the Anchorage summit, Russia had supported the US proposal for a comprehensive resolution to the Ukraine crisis; however, the positions of the two parties diverged shortly thereafter. The diplomat added that following the meeting in Alaska, the Russian side expected Washington to convene a conference to discuss the reached agreements, but the US opted for new sanctions instead.
The meeting in Anchorage, Alaska, represents a significant diplomatic touchpoint in the ongoing complex relations between Washington and Moscow. Historically, such summits are intended to establish a framework for de-escalation and strategic stability. The imposition of sanctions on major energy entities like Lukoil and Rosneft remains a critical tool in US foreign policy, often impacting global energy markets and bilateral diplomatic efforts between the two nations.
