Russia and the United States may sign a new nuclear weapons treaty to ensure international security following the expiration of the previous agreement on February 5. According to military expert Ivan Konovalov, the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) could serve as a vital foundation for maintaining global stability as both parties consider the future of arms control.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Konovalov, in an interview with gazeta.ru, stated that the Russian Federation has already brought this issue to the agenda. He noted that from Moscow's perspective, such an agreement could provide a serious platform for forming a new global security system. The expert further mentioned that US President Donald Trump has identified numerous priorities in foreign policy and military-political directions, which are currently under review by the administration.
The New START treaty, originally signed in 2010, is the last remaining major arms control agreement between the world's two largest nuclear powers. It limits the number of deployed strategic nuclear warheads and bombs held by the US and Russia. As the geopolitical landscape evolves, the potential renewal or replacement of this treaty is seen by international observers as a critical step in preventing a new arms race and ensuring predictable relations between Washington and Moscow in the sphere of strategic deterrence.
