Russian President Vladimir Putin's recent statement regarding his readiness for peace negotiations with Ukraine, based on agreements previously reached in Istanbul, has become a focal point of international attention.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov addressed the matter during a briefing with journalists in Moscow.
Peskov emphasized that Russia's position regarding the resolution of the Ukraine conflict remains unchanged. He stated that the fundamental principles for ending the war were established by the Russian leadership two years ago, and President Vladimir Putin continues to adhere to that established line.
Regarding the potential for Istanbul to serve as a platform for future negotiations, Peskov noted that no concrete agreement has been reached yet. He stressed that for any mediation initiatives to materialize, all involved parties must demonstrate a genuine readiness for dialogue.
The Kremlin spokesperson also commented on the mediation efforts of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, highlighting the necessity of clarifying the approach of European countries toward the negotiation process. He noted that contradictory statements from various sides continue to complicate the peace process.
Furthermore, Peskov addressed the role of BRICS, stating that the organization cannot act as a mediator in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, as it lacks the necessary institutional mechanisms to perform such a function.
In addition to the Ukraine conflict, Peskov touched upon broader geopolitical issues, including Russia-Armenia relations, where he emphasized the continuation of the strategic partnership, and reiterated Russia's commitment to Belarus's security, affirming readiness for joint action against potential threats to the allied nation.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which escalated significantly in February 2022, has remained a central issue in global diplomacy. Various international actors have attempted to facilitate dialogue, though a comprehensive peace settlement remains elusive due to deeply entrenched positions on security guarantees, territorial integrity, and geopolitical alignment in Eastern Europe.
