The European Union should initiate discussions regarding the acquisition of its own nuclear weapons, according to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Kallas emphasized the necessity of nuclear deterrence in the current geopolitical climate. "Considering the current situation and the fact that nuclear weapons are truly the only thing that deters, nuclear deterrence may be part of future discussions," she stated.

The head of European diplomacy noted that while nuclear deterrence has traditionally been the responsibility of individual EU member states, the fundamental change in the security environment requires a new approach. Kallas also mentioned that European countries remain committed to existing treaties that limit nuclear proliferation but suggested that the evolving situation in Eastern Europe necessitates a re-evaluation of the bloc's defense architecture.

Regarding the resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Kallas indicated that she sees no need for a new EU special representative for negotiations, as the relevant institutions and frameworks already exist within Europe. Since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the European Union has significantly increased its defense cooperation and military support to Kyiv. Kallas, who recently transitioned from her role as Estonia's Prime Minister to the EU's top diplomatic post, has been a vocal advocate for a robust and unified European response to regional security threats.
