The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, has called on all parties to reduce tensions following the renewed conflict between Iran and Israel.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Kallas made these remarks during an informal meeting of EU defense ministers held in Cyprus. She emphasized that the region requires dialogue rather than further escalation.
“We witnessed another escalation of the situation last night. I believe the region does not need further tension. The parties must come to the negotiating table and reach an agreement,” Kallas stated. Addressing ongoing discussions between the United States and Iran, the EU High Representative underscored the necessity of finding a diplomatic solution to the crisis. She confirmed that the European Union is actively engaging with both sides to stress the importance of a ceasefire.
“The most important issue right now is stopping the war, ensuring the Strait of Hormuz remains open, and subsequently conducting long-term negotiations on complex issues, including the nuclear program,” she added. The current regional instability follows a period of heightened friction, with military operations resuming on June 7 after a ceasefire agreement reached in April. The recent surge in hostilities has been largely attributed to Israeli operations targeting members of the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement in Beirut, which prompted retaliatory measures from Tehran.
