A woman who accused rapper Jay-Z of raping her when she was 13 has formally stated that her allegation was false, according to the BBC.
The woman, identified in court documents as Jane Doe, filed a lawsuit in 2024 alleging that she had been drugged and raped by Jay-Z, whose legal name is Shawn Carter, and Sean “Diddy” Combs at a party following the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards.
Both men denied the allegation, and she dropped the lawsuit in February 2025. Carter subsequently sued the woman and her former lawyers.
In a declaration filed in that case on Thursday, the woman wrote: “Shawn ‘Jay-Z’ Carter never raped me. I have never met or spoken to Mr. Carter. Mr. Carter never engaged in any inappropriate conduct toward me whatsoever.”
She added that her claims that Carter and Combs raped her while a third celebrity watched were false, saying there was “no truth” to any of her allegations against Carter.
“I understand my false accusations have caused Mr Carter immense pain, suffering, and damage that can never be fully undone,” she wrote.
Carter continues legal action against lawyers
Carter has strongly denied the allegations, previously describing them as a “blackmail attempt” and “frivolous, fictitious and appalling allegations”.
After the lawsuit was withdrawn, the rapper, who is married to singer Beyoncé, said the ordeal had caused lasting trauma to his wife, children, loved ones and himself.
The woman, who is from Alabama, has now been removed from Carter’s lawsuit. She said she had not received money from Carter or anyone acting on his behalf and had not been paid to make the new declaration.
Carter’s legal action against the woman’s former lawyers, including attorney Tony Buzbee, is continuing.
In comments to Rolling Stone, which first reported the declaration, Buzbee said he had not seen the document. He said several lawyers had spoken to the woman before she met him and that she had given them the same account.
“If for some reason now she is claiming she lied to us and the court, that’s new information,” Buzbee said.
Buzbee previously alleged that investigators working for Carter had repeatedly harassed and threatened the woman in an effort to make her withdraw her account. In her latest declaration, she said she had never received any threat from Carter or anyone acting on his behalf.
Woman says lawyers did not investigate allegations
According to the declaration, the woman saw a Facebook advertisement in September or October 2024 seeking people who might have sexual assault claims against Combs. She said the advertisement triggered memories of an alleged rape when she was 13.
She said a law firm later contacted her but did not provide her with a draft of the lawsuit before it was filed, and that she had not authorised the complaint.
The woman also alleged that Buzbee and other lawyers filed the case without conducting an independent investigation, background inquiry or due diligence, and without obtaining corroborating evidence.
Combs denied the allegations. His lawyer previously described the case as one of several civil lawsuits being advanced by an attorney more interested in media attention than legal merit.
Combs was convicted in July 2025 on prostitution-related charges involving two former girlfriends and is serving a four-year prison sentence.
