Israeli President Isaac Herzog has expressed a desire to establish friendly relations and normalize ties with Lebanon.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the President shared his vision for a peaceful regional future during a reception for diplomats held on the occasion of Israel's Independence Day. Herzog emphasized that creating a secure environment full of opportunities for future generations remains a primary objective for the state.
"Israel looks forward to working with all of you to create a Middle East where all our sons and daughters inherit opportunity, not fear," the President stated. He further shared a personal aspiration regarding the neighboring country, saying, "My dream is to get in a car and drive directly to Beirut, visit this beautiful city, and be friends with the Lebanese people." Herzog expressed hope that the next round of planned negotiations between the two nations would yield successful results, while noting that ensuring border security remains a prerequisite for achieving lasting peace.
The President's remarks come at a time of significant regional complexity. While Israel and Lebanon have no formal diplomatic relations and remain technically in a state of conflict, there have been historical precedents for technical agreements, such as the 2022 maritime border deal. Such statements from the presidency are often seen as diplomatic signals intended to foster a long-term vision for regional integration and stability in the Middle East, despite the ongoing security challenges on the ground.
