Iran could significantly expand the scale of its military responses if the United States initiates ground operations in the region. Operative Information Center-OMM reports that The Wall Street Journal released this information, citing expert analysis on the escalating geopolitical tensions.
According to military specialists, Tehran’s primary targets in the event of a direct confrontation would likely include offshore oil platforms, power plants, and other critical infrastructure facilities. Sanam Vakil, director of the Middle East and North Africa program at Chatham House, stated that Iran would seek to make any intervention by US President Donald Trump's administration both economically and politically unsustainable. She noted that Tehran would initially deploy mass drone strikes before broadening its retaliatory measures to encompass neighboring territories.
The potential for escalation comes amid heightened regional instability and shifting military doctrines. Douglas Macgregor, a retired US Army colonel, previously noted that Iran is fully prepared for American ground operations, suggesting that Washington may be underestimating the Islamic Republic's defensive and offensive capabilities. Macgregor added that the US currently lacks the necessary infrastructure and logistical capacity to safely transport and maintain troops in the projected theater of operations. This strategic standoff highlights the complex security dynamics in the Middle East, where critical energy corridors and international trade routes remain sensitive to any shift in military posturing between Washington and Tehran.
