The number of fatalities resulting from mass protest actions in Iran has exceeded 5,000 people. Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the HRANA human rights organization released these updated figures regarding the scale of the unrest.

According to the report, a total of 26,752 individuals have been detained across various regions of the country since the disturbances began. The organization specifies that out of the 5,000 confirmed deaths, 207 were members of the security forces. This marks an increase from the organization's previous report, which had placed the death toll at 4,902 just one day prior.

Official Iranian sources, however, provide conflicting statistics. The Forensic Medicine Department of the Iranian Martyrs and Veterans Foundation stated that 3,117 people, including both civilians and security personnel, have lost their lives during the events. The protests initially broke out on December 28, 2025, triggered by the sharp devaluation of the national currency and deepening economic hardships. As the demonstrations expanded in scope, authorities restricted internet access in the capital, Tehran, on January 8 to curb the spread of the movement.

The current wave of instability in Iran comes at a time of heightened regional tensions and significant economic pressure. Such large-scale demonstrations often reflect underlying socio-economic grievances and have historically led to increased scrutiny from international human rights monitors. The discrepancy between NGO reports and official government data remains a common feature of reporting on internal conflicts within the region, as independent verification remains challenging due to communication restrictions.
