Iranian official Gharibabadi has responded to threats made by US President Donald Trump regarding potential strikes on Iran's civilian infrastructure in a statement released on his social media account.
According to Operative Information Center-OMM, the official noted that the use of force against the territorial integrity of Iran constitutes a gross violation of the UN Charter and General Assembly Resolution 3314.
Gharibabadi highlighted several key international legal norms in his statement:
“Under Article 8 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, the threat of attacking civilian objects such as power plants and bridges is a war crime. According to Article 52 of the 1977 Geneva Protocol, such statements create individual criminal responsibility.”
Emphasizing that Iran will exercise its right to self-defense, the official stated that any threat would be met with a decisive response in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter. He advised the US leader to abandon these threats, warning that otherwise, he would go down in history as a "super war criminal" and that the consequences of such actions would not be limited to Iran alone.
The exchange comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, where rhetoric regarding military intervention and economic sanctions has intensified. International observers note that threats against critical infrastructure often escalate regional instability, impacting global energy markets and diplomatic efforts. Iran has frequently cited international statutes to challenge US foreign policy maneuvers in the region, maintaining its stance on national sovereignty and regional influence.
