The Iranian parliament has officially designated the armed forces of European Union (EU) member states as terrorist organizations.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of the Iranian legislature, announced the decision in an official statement. The Speaker noted that the resolution was adopted in accordance with Article 7 of the law "On Countermeasures."
According to Ghalibaf, this step is a direct response to the European Union's recent decision to recognize the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. He emphasized that the responsibility for all consequences arising from this decision rests solely with the European Union.
The diplomatic escalation follows a move on January 29 by the EU Foreign Affairs Council, which added the IRGC to its list of terrorist organizations, citing the group's involvement in the crackdown on protesters. This reciprocal measure by Tehran highlights the deepening rift between Iran and European nations over security and human rights issues. Historically, such designations lead to increased economic sanctions, restricted diplomatic channels, and heightened military tensions in the Middle East region, particularly regarding maritime security and regional proxy conflicts.
