Iran has announced a total ban on vessels associated with the United States and Israel from transiting through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing foreign media, that Ibrahim Zulfiqari, a representative of the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters of the Iranian Armed Forces, issued the official statement regarding the maritime restriction.

"Enemy ships do not and will not have the right to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Other vessels will continue to have the right to transit the strait as before, provided they comply with the regulations of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran," Zulfiqari stated.

Conflict with US and Israel: Ceasefire and new regulations in the Strait of Hormuz

The escalation follows military operations launched by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28. These operations resulted in the deaths of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several high-ranking officials. In response, Iran initiated strikes against targets in Israel, as well as locations hosting US and allied military bases in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bahrain, Iraq, and Cyprus.

Following the period of intense hostilities, Iran, the United States, and their allies reached an agreement for a two-week ceasefire on the night of April 8, 2026. Iran has specified that during this period, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz must be coordinated with the country's Armed Forces and will be subject to technical limitations.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important oil chokepoints, linking Middle East petroleum producers with key markets in Asia, Europe, and North America. Approximately one-fifth of the world's total oil consumption passes through this narrow waterway daily. Under international law, the strait is considered an international waterway; however, Iran's recent declaration and its geographical position allow it to exert significant influence over maritime traffic, often leading to heightened geopolitical tensions in the region.
