The Strait of Hormuz is closed only to vessels belonging to parties involved in military operations against Iran, according to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The statement was made during a telephone conversation with his French counterpart, Jean-Noël Barrot.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Araghchi emphasized the legal basis for these restrictions. "This waterway is closed to the ships of parties participating in military aggression against Iran. This decision is based on the principles of international law and aims to prevent the misuse of the Strait of Hormuz for launching illegal attacks against Iran," the minister stated.
Araghchi further noted that the movement of vessels belonging to other nations continues to be conducted in coordination with the relevant Iranian authorities. He warned that any provocative actions by the United States, Israel, or their supporters—including the UN Security Council—regarding the situation in the Strait of Hormuz would only serve to further complicate regional stability.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most strategically important chokepoints, serving as the primary maritime route for oil exports from the Persian Gulf. Approximately one-fifth of the world's total oil consumption passes through this narrow waterway daily. Given its significance to global energy security, any threats or restrictions regarding transit through the strait frequently lead to increased international tensions and fluctuations in global oil markets.
