Following the recent parliamentary elections in Armenia, discussions regarding the formation of the new legislative leadership have commenced within the ruling Civil Contract party.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing the "Hraparak" newspaper, internal competition for high-ranking positions—specifically the post of parliamentary speaker—has intensified significantly.
Sources suggest that the current faction leader, Hayk Kondjoryan, is being positioned as a primary candidate for the speaker role, with some party members advocating for a leadership change. Meanwhile, Vice-Speaker Ruben Rubinyan is also considered a contender, though his reputation for being confrontational and difficulties in fostering constructive dialogue have reportedly generated internal dissatisfaction.
Additionally, the potential candidacy of Lilit Makunts, Armenia's former ambassador to the United States, remains a subject of discussion. While analysts currently view her chances of securing the position as low, she was previously identified as a key candidate for the role.
The Civil Contract party, led by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, has dominated Armenian politics since the 2018 "Velvet Revolution." The outcome of these internal deliberations is critical, as the speaker of the parliament plays a pivotal role in shaping the legislative agenda and managing the political dynamics within the National Assembly of Armenia.
