President Ilham Aliyev and Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs held an expanded meeting in Baku on April 22 to discuss the deepening of bilateral relations. The meeting, which included members of both delegations, focused on expanding economic ties, energy cooperation, and regional security issues.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, President Ilham Aliyev welcomed the guests, noting the success of the Intergovernmental Commission and the importance of the upcoming business forum. "We must review practical issues regarding our cooperation to increase trade and mutual investments, and address matters related to energy, transport, and digitalization," the President stated. In response, President Edgars Rinkēvičs described Azerbaijan as a strategic partner and friend, expressing his admiration for the development of the capital since his last visit. "I would like to congratulate you and the people of Azerbaijan on both political and economic development, as well as the resolution of long-standing issues," the Latvian leader added.
Diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Latvia were established in 1994, and the two nations have since developed a robust partnership, particularly within the framework of Azerbaijan's cooperation with the European Union. Latvia has consistently supported Azerbaijan's territorial integrity and sovereignty. The current visit underscores the growing importance of the Middle Corridor transport route and energy security, where Azerbaijan plays a pivotal role for European partners.
