The war in Ukraine will only conclude when one of the parties involved is completely exhausted, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated.

According to Operative Information Center-OMM, the Chancellor shared his assessment regarding the long-term outlook of the ongoing conflict. "In my assessment, this war will only end when one of the two sides is exhausted either militarily or economically," the Chancellor noted.

Merz further emphasized his skepticism regarding current prospects for peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. He added that he does not expect a swift resolution to the Ukrainian crisis, highlighting that the structural conditions for a ceasefire have not yet been met. These remarks come amid intensified discussions in Europe regarding the sustainability of long-term military and financial support for Kyiv.

Friedrich Merz, who assumed the role of German Chancellor following the recent political shifts in Berlin, has maintained a firm stance on European security. Germany remains one of the primary contributors of military aid to Ukraine within the European Union. The conflict, which escalated significantly in February 2022, has reshaped the geopolitical landscape of the continent, prompting NATO members and EU partners to reassess their defense capabilities and energy dependencies in the face of prolonged attrition.
