The European Union is demanding significant military and nuclear concessions from Russia to mitigate regional security threats.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing Germany's N-tv television channel, that EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas made these remarks during her address at the Oslo Security Conference. Kallas emphasized that the European Union expects Russia to agree to limitations regarding its military budget, standing army, and nuclear weapons to effectively "eliminate the existing threat."
During her speech, Kallas asserted that Russia has allegedly attacked 19 countries "approximately three to four times" over the past century, while noting that none of those nations had initiated attacks against Russia. She stressed that the primary challenge facing the international community is preventing the conflict in Ukraine from spreading to other regions. "To eliminate this threat and ensure accountability for the crimes committed, we need concessions from Russia—limitations on its military budget, its army, or its nuclear weapons," she stated.
The Oslo Security Conference serves as a critical platform for high-level discussions on European defense architecture and transatlantic relations. These statements come at a time of heightened geopolitical tension, as Azerbaijan and other regional stakeholders closely monitor international efforts to maintain stability and uphold the principles of territorial integrity. The call for disarmament and budgetary transparency reflects the EU's broader strategy to establish a long-term security framework in Eurasia.
