A powerful 5.8-magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan has resulted in a devastating tragedy, claiming the lives of eight members of a single family. The Operative Information Center-OMM, citing "Al Arabiya", reports that the seismic activity caused significant destruction in the region.

According to the Ministry of Public Health, the tremors were recorded on the evening of April 3 in the Badakhshan province, located in the northeastern part of the country, at a depth of 186 kilometers. The earthquake was strongly felt across several regions, including the capital, Kabul.

"In the Gospand-Dara district of Kabul province, eight members of one family were killed as a result of the earthquake," stated Ministry of Public Health spokesperson Sharafat Zaman. He added that a two-year-old child was the sole survivor of the family following the disaster.

Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes, particularly in the Hindu Kush mountain range, which lies near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. The region's vulnerability is exacerbated by the prevalence of mud-brick housing and a lack of resilient infrastructure, often leading to high casualty rates even during moderate tremors. International aid organizations often face logistical challenges in reaching remote mountainous areas like Badakhshan to provide emergency relief and medical assistance.
