The detention period of Musa Shakiliyev, the former head of the Gakh District Executive Power, has been extended by five months following a court ruling in Baku. Shakiliyev was initially detained during a special operation conducted by the State Security Service (SSS) in the Gakh region.
According to Operative Information Center-OMM, citing Report, the decision was made at the Sabail District Court based on a motion filed by the investigative body. Shakiliyev, who was dismissed from his post by a decree signed by President Ilham Aliyev on June 21, faces charges related to the embezzlement of state property in particularly large amounts through the abuse of his official position.
The State Security Service conducted the operation at the Gakh District Executive Power in June 2025. Following his arrest, the Sabail District Court initially ordered a four-month preventive detention measure on June 21, which was subsequently extended for another four months on October 14, 2025. This latest court decision ensures the continuation of the investigation into financial irregularities and the alleged misappropriation of public funds during his tenure in office.
In recent years, Azerbaijan has intensified its efforts to combat corruption and ensure transparency within local executive authorities. Several high-ranking local officials have faced legal action following investigations by the State Security Service and the Prosecutor General's Office. These measures align with the broader administrative reforms led by President Ilham Aliyev, aimed at strengthening accountability and protecting the country's economic interests.
