The death toll from the devastating floods in Nepal has risen to 469, according to the latest reports. The disaster has severely impacted the Trishuli region, where massive mudslides have buried roads and destroyed numerous vehicles, rendering them unusable.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that local authorities have characterized this event as the most severe natural disaster to strike the country since the catastrophic earthquake of 2015. Preliminary assessments by experts suggest that the sudden flooding may have been triggered by glacial collapse. Security forces have cordoned off dangerous areas to prevent further casualties.
Large-scale rescue operations are currently underway, supported by helicopter deployments. Authorities report that the majority of the 450 individuals trapped in one of the tunnels in the Trishuli region have been successfully evacuated.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, the disaster has destroyed 80 bridges and rendered 40 kilometers of asphalt roads impassable. These widespread damages pose significant challenges for the government of Prime Minister Balendra Shah, who assumed office in March.
The incident, which occurred near the Chinese border, has halted trade turnover with Nepal's second-largest trading partner. Given the country's heavy reliance on imports, the disruption in the supply chain is expected to impose a substantial economic burden on the nation. Meanwhile, China's Xinhua news agency announced that 555 tourists stranded in the Tibet region have been evacuated. Officials from India, Australia, and the United States have also reported missing citizens in the disaster zone and are closely monitoring the ongoing search and rescue efforts.
