China and the United States have reached a consensus on recommendations for more favorable tariff treatment for $30 billion of non-sensitive goods in each direction, the White House said, according to the statement issued after Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the United States.
Xi concluded a three-day state visit to Washington with his wife, Peng Liyuan. It was his first state visit to the US in more than a decade and his second visit to the country since 2015.
Trade and investment measures
US exports covered by the recommendations include agricultural products, fish and seafood, logs and wood products, cosmetics and medical devices. Goods imported from the US by China include small appliances, toys, holiday decorations and children’s car seats.
US President Donald Trump urged Xi to increase production of refined petroleum products to help stabilise global supplies, the White House said. The two countries also launched a working group to address market-access barriers in the agricultural sector.
China will import at least 10 million metric tonnes of coal from the United States in both 2027 and 2028, according to the statement.
The countries also established a Board of Investment to examine potential investment opportunities and barriers, creating a channel for discussions on commercially significant investment-related issues.
Washington and Beijing are continuing to address US concerns about supply shortages involving rare earths and other critical minerals, with the stated aim of restoring shipments to appropriate levels.
Xi and Trump discuss global issues
Xi and Trump discussed “fostering peace and prosperity” and agreed to build “a constructive relationship of strategic stability” based on respect, fairness and reciprocity.
The leaders addressed international issues involving Russia, North Korea and Iran. They agreed that Iran “can never have a nuclear weapon” and that no country or institution should be allowed to impose tolls on international waterways.
Xi and Trump also recalled that China and the United States had been allies during World War II and had fought together to win the war. Trump advocated trilateral arms-control talks involving the US, Russia and China.
New dialogue on emerging technologies
The two countries agreed to use the term “super intelligence” for applicable emerging technologies instead of “artificial intelligence”. They also established a US-China Super Intelligence Dialogue to discuss the risks and benefits of those technologies.
The next dialogue is expected to take place by November 2026. The countries further agreed to establish a bilateral channel for incidents related to artificial intelligence.
