Tropical storm "Chanmi," accompanied by heavy rainfall and strong winds, has reached the southern part of Japan's Wakayama Prefecture, causing significant transportation disruptions across the central and eastern regions of the country.

The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the Japan Meteorological Agency has issued urgent warnings regarding the storm's progression.

As of the morning of June 3, the cyclone was located approximately 40 km east of Shima City in Mie Prefecture, moving northeast at a speed of about 40 km/h. Authorities have issued flood, evacuation, and landslide warnings for several rivers in Tokyo and surrounding areas.

Meteorologists have warned of continued heavy rainfall and gale-force winds along the Pacific coast. Waves have reached heights of up to 9 meters in some locations, posing a severe threat to coastal infrastructure.

The typhoon has already caused major disruptions to the transportation network. Railway operators have canceled dozens of routes, including lines in the Tokyo metropolitan area, with service on several intercity and suburban lines being completely or partially suspended.

Air travel has also been paralyzed, with approximately 760 domestic and over 90 international flights canceled, including a significant portion of operations at Haneda Airport. Japan is frequently impacted by typhoon season, which typically runs from late spring through autumn, necessitating robust disaster preparedness protocols to mitigate the impact of such extreme weather events on the nation's densely populated urban centers.
