Serious environmental violations have been uncovered in various water basins across Baku and several regions of Azerbaijan, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The Ministry reported to the Operative Information Center-OMM that the Water Transport Police Department conducted targeted operations following appeals from the State Service for Control over the Use and Protection of Water Resources under the State Water Resources Agency. These measures were aimed at ensuring compliance with national water legislation.
Investigations revealed significant violations in lakes located in the Buzovna settlement of the Khazar district, the Bulbul settlement of the Suraxani district, and the Mammadli village of the Absheron district. Similar infractions were identified along the banks of the Garachay River in the Yuxari Aghjakand settlement of the Goranboy district, and near the Dalichay River in the Balakan district.
Authorities confirmed that these water bodies were being illegally filled with construction debris, household waste, and solid materials. Furthermore, unauthorized soil excavation and dumping activities were recorded within the coastal protection zones, which have altered the local topography and disrupted the hydrological regime of these areas.
Criminal cases have been initiated under the relevant articles of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan regarding these incidents. Necessary investigative measures are currently underway to provide a legal assessment of the environmental damage caused.
Azerbaijan has been intensifying its efforts to protect its water resources and ecosystems, particularly as part of broader national environmental protection strategies. The protection of coastal zones and riverbeds is critical for maintaining ecological balance and ensuring sustainable water management in the country.
