Geka Geladze, head of Georgia’s State Security Service, held a face-to-face meeting with Ali Naghiyev, head of Azerbaijan’s State Security Service, in China.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Global Public Security Cooperation Forum in Lianyungang, Jiangsu province, eastern China. More than 100 senior law enforcement and security officials from over 100 countries attended the fifth edition of the forum.
According to a statement issued by Georgia’s State Security Service, the sides discussed “modern challenges facing international security” and the regional security situation amid growing global threats.
The meeting highlighted the strategic partnership between Georgia and Azerbaijan, while both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening cooperation between their security agencies. No new specific agreements were announced.
Lianyungang is strategically important for China’s transport links with Central Asia and the South Caucasus. The city is one of the main ports at the eastern end of the New Eurasian Land Bridge and an important hub for rail-sea links under the Belt and Road Initiative.
Lianyungang is also connected to rail and maritime routes being developed through Kazakhstan’s Port of Aktau. These routes are intended to transport cargo from China across the Caspian Sea along the Middle Corridor.
The Middle Corridor, which links China and Central Asia with Europe through Azerbaijan, Georgia and Türkiye, provided a broader trade and transport context for the meeting. However, the main focus of the talks was security cooperation between Tbilisi and Baku.
In recent years, Georgia has been developing ties with China and Azerbaijan in trade, transport and regional cooperation. The sides have not provided further details about the meeting or the next round of talks.
