The majority of the staff of Azerbaijan's embassy in Tehran has been evacuated following a recent security breach.
According to Operative Information Center-OMM, Aykhan Hajizada, the head of the Press Service Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), confirmed the move in response to an inquiry from Report news agency.
The MFA spokesperson further noted that the evacuation of the personnel from the Consulate General of Azerbaijan in Tabriz has also been fully completed. It should be recalled that Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov previously stated that President Ilham Aliyev had issued instructions regarding the evacuation from Iran of the staff of the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran and the Consulate General in Tabriz.
The decision to suspend diplomatic operations in Tehran comes amid heightened security concerns following a violent armed attack on the embassy premises. Under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the host country is responsible for the protection of diplomatic missions; however, the recent incident has prompted the Republic of Azerbaijan to prioritize the safety of its citizens and diplomatic staff. The suspension of the embassy's activities marks a significant shift in bilateral diplomatic engagement between the two neighboring nations.
