Azerbaijan and Latvia are set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in consular matters, aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and streamlining administrative processes between the two nations.
Operative Information Center-OMM, citing the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reports that the document will be signed during the official visit of Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs to Azerbaijan, scheduled for April 21–23, 2026. The Latvian head of state will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Baiba Braže during the high-level mission to Baku.
"Latvia and Azerbaijan will sign several documents aimed at expanding cooperation. Baiba Braže will sign a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in consular matters between the foreign ministries of Latvia and Azerbaijan, which will enhance mutual activity in the field of consular information and exchange of experience," the official statement noted. Additionally, Braže is scheduled to hold a separate meeting with Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov to discuss bilateral cooperation, the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the situation in Ukraine, and other regional and international security issues.
The upcoming visit underscores the growing diplomatic and economic partnership between Azerbaijan and Latvia, which has evolved significantly since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1994. As a member of the European Union and NATO, Latvia views Azerbaijan as a strategic partner in the South Caucasus, particularly in the fields of energy security, transport logistics, and trade. This high-level meeting follows a series of bilateral engagements intended to align the two countries' positions on international law and regional stability.
