German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has called on Hungary to reconsider its decision to block the latest round of sanctions against Moscow, emphasizing the need for European unity in the face of ongoing regional challenges.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing foreign media, that the German diplomat expressed his concerns during high-level discussions in Brussels regarding the European Union's collective response to the conflict in Ukraine.

"Hungary's position surprises me. We will discuss this with our Hungarian colleagues. Therefore, both in Budapest and here in Brussels, we will reiterate our arguments so that their position is reconsidered," he noted.

Wadephul emphasized the critical importance of maintaining pressure on Russia and providing sustained support to Ukraine. EU foreign ministers are currently in Brussels debating the 20th round of sanctions, which was strategically planned for adoption ahead of the fourth anniversary of the commencement of military operations in Ukraine.

However, the path to consensus remains difficult. Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has indicated that the adoption of the package is unlikely at this stage due to Budapest's firm opposition. This internal friction highlights the growing challenges within the European Union regarding the implementation of restrictive measures that require unanimous agreement among all member states.

The European Union's sanctions regime typically targets key sectors of the Russian economy, including energy, finance, and technology, as well as individuals deemed responsible for undermining Ukraine's territorial integrity. As the conflict enters its fourth year, the diplomatic tug-of-war between Brussels and Budapest underscores the complexities of maintaining a unified Western front while balancing the diverse economic and political interests of individual member nations.
